attended by (surprisingly? - perhaps not) three men and a greater than usual number of women. Interpretation generally revolved around questioning exactly what she means by 'love' (lust? temporary commitment?) and whether marriage has changed sufficiently for her objections to be invalid and how institutions of the state (like marriage) privilege the individual at the expense of the social. Opinions ranged from cautious/conservative (marriage makes stable communities, provides for emotional support) to radical (power imbalance in gender relations is perpetuated by marriage which, as an institution of the state, can only ever be oppressive). It was agreed that we needed a further discussion on the role of sexuality in power relations. Next reading will be Michel Foucault's The History of Sexuality: An Introduction (part 1, ch1 and part 4, ch 2).

On the organisation of the January symposium: can we have a list of what's already been proposed? That might help those of us who are thinking about doing something to firm up our ideas for our own proposals. Also a list of the practical jobs that need doing (cooking, cleaning, moving furniture etc.) and whether anyone has actually offered to do them yet.
